The Longer the Waiting, the Sweeter the Kiss

[Samantha James]

Samantha was working a normal fast track case when one of the nurses told her she might want to pick up the next file in the stack. She nodded and grabbed the file in the small holder on the exam room door.

She glanced over the file. It seemed simple enough, sore throat, stomach pains, simple things. She was just about to walk into the room when she noticed the name. Davis, Roger Adam. She hadn't seen her former best friend in nine years. Taking a deep breath she pushed the door open and stepped inside.

[Roger Davis]

Roger took a deep breath, he hadn't seen Samantha since he left town and his stomach was in knots. He knew faking an illness to see her probably wasn't one of his best ideas, but he was willing to take the risk.

Samantha swallowed hard. "Roger......"

[Roger Davis]

Roger turned to face the door, "Sammy?" Roger subconsciously slipped into his childhood nickname for her. "You haven't changed a bit."

Samantha gave a small smile. "Neither have you it looks like..."

[Roger Davis]

Roger smiled softly, "No, I guess I haven't. So how ya been Sammy? Anything new and exciting in your life?" Roger hoped Samantha wouldn't see through his thinly veiled questions.

"If you call raising a disabled little girl alone after your best friend abandoned you when you needed him most exciting then yes, it's been thrilling," Samantha replied, bitterness thick in her voice.

[Roger Davis]

Roger's face paled dramatically. "Sammy I....."

[Samantha James]

"You what Roger?" Samantha asked. "Did you expect that you could just come back nine years later and I'd forget all about what you did to me?"

[Roger Davis]

"No I just..." Roger sighed and ran a hand through his hair, "I just needed to leave for a while Sammy."

[Samantha James]

"You needed......you needed," the brunette shook her head. "Did you ever stop to think about what I needed?"

[Roger Davis]

Roger slumped into a hard, plastic chair, "Sammy I swear that I didn't mean to hurt you, but there are things you don't understand yet."

[Samantha James]

Samantha shook her head, turning her back as she felt the tears come. "The day you left I lost everything that ever meant anything to me," she said with a sniffle. "I might as well have lost both of you in that accident, that's what it felt like...."

[Roger Davis]

Roger stood up, "Sammy I am so sorry. Hurting you is the absolute last thing I wanted to do." Roger hugged Sammy. "I swear to you that will make it up to you....that is if you'll let me."

[Samantha James]

"How?" Samantha asked softly.

[Roger Davis]

Roger smiled tentatively, "Well first I'd like to take you out tonight."

[Samantha James]

Samantha took a deep breath. "I'll have to find a sitter for Hailey first." she gave a small smile. "She...um...she knows about you."

[Roger Davis]

Roger blinked. H was surprised that Sammy told her daughter about him, "I can't wait to meet her, I bet she's beautiful."

[Samantha James]

Samantha smiled. "She is."

[Roger Davis]

Roger smiled, "She must take after you."

[Samantha James]

Samantha blushed a bit. "Child is her father in a dress I swear."

[Roger Davis]

Roger shook his head and smiled. "You never could take a compliment." He moved to grab his jacket. "So I'll pick you up around 8?"

[Samantha James]

Samantha nodded. "I'm living in Nana's old house now, you remember where that is?"

[Roger Davis]

"Yep I remember." Roger took a piece of paper out of his pocket. "Here's my cell number, I'll see you later Sammy."

She slipped the paper into her pocket. "See ya."
